In The Know: Cardiology Care

Pacemakers
A Pacemaker is a small device implanted under the skin that sends electrical
signal to start or regulate a slow heartbeat. It is a popular treatment option.
ICD
An ICD (Implantable Converter Defibrillator) is a small device that is similar
to pacemaker and implanted in the body, often just under the collarbone. ICDs
deliver small electrical shocks to regulate the heart rate.
Cardiac Catheterization
This procedure can help doctors diagnose a number of heart conditions, including
coronary artery disease and defective heart valves. During the procedure, a
doctor inserts a thin plastic tube (catheter) into an artery or vein in the
arm or leg where it is then advanced into the heart or coronary arteries. Cardiac
Catheterization is used to get information about the pumping ability of the
heart.
Cardiac Interventions
Cardiac Interventions are procedures that use specialized catheters to open
up clogged arteries. Cardiac interventions include balloon angioplasty and the
insertion of stents to keep arteries open.
Peripheral Interventions
Catheters can also be used to open up kidney arteries and other arteries in
the lower body that have become diseased. These procedures are performed by
a cardiologist.
