The Breast Care Center

When asked why he chose Surgical Oncology for his career, Dr. Konstantino Avradopoulos explains, “Once I finished my residency I looked back and realized that treating cancer cases were the most challenging and rewarding. One breast cancer patient, for instance, can be treated three or four different ways, depending on circumstances.

Dr. Avradopoulos is a co-director at the Fallon Breast Cancer Clinic. “We’re very proud of the Breast Clinic. This multidisciplinary clinic brings together surgeons, radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other key people into one room where they review mammograms, ultrasounds, pathology slides, and other pertinent data on each case, and discuss the treatment options. It really is a superior way to provide treatment.”

When it comes to treating patients, Dr. Avradopoulos strives to make his care as comprehensive, compassionate and contemporary as possible. “I tell my patients that I will treat them the way I would treat someone in my own family – and I really do mean that. To me, each patient is unique and deserving of the best care. Undergoing major surgery for cancer can be a very stressful experience. I want my patients to understand that the team of doctors taking care of them is going to do its utmost to cure their cancer and provide them the best chance for long-term survival.”

According to Dr. Avradopoulos, surgery has undergone a lot of changes in the last decade. In fact, he was the first physician at the Worcester Medical Center to perform some of the methods he is using now. Dr. Avradopoulos was the first surgeon at Fallon Clinic to perform sentinel lymph node biopsies for melanoma and breast cancer. “I was the first surgeon to perform minimally invasive parathyroid surgery and the first surgeon to perform radiofrequency ablation, which uses heat to destroy cancer. It is really night and day from what I was doing as a resident compared to what we are doing now. The technologies used today are very much different from what I learned as a resident years ago.”

Dr. Avradopoulos once had an interesting experience with one patient, a WWII veteran with a very large abdominal tumor. Other surgeons did not want to operate on this patient because of his age, and the complexity of his procedure. Dr. Avradopoulos, however, took up the challenge. The patient told Dr. Avradopoulos that he just wanted to make it to his WWII reunion which featured the original LST ship that carried him across the English Channel on D-Day. The operation was successful and the patient was so pleased, he invited Dr. Avradopoulos to go to the reunion with him. “I had a great time,” said Dr. Avradopoulos. “It was fascinating talking with those WWII veterans, it really gave me an appreciation for all they went through.”
