A graduate of the University of Vermont Medical School, Dr. Daniel Guilbert has been practicing medicine for 26 years, almost all of them at Fallon Clinic in Auburn. In fact, Dr. Guilbert was one of the first Fallon Clinic physicians to practice in the Auburn clinic.

When it came to choosing his life-long profession, Dr. Guilbert didn’t have much difficulty making a decision. “I have wanted to be a doctor as long as I can remember,” he explains. “I really think being a physician is just about the most interesting way to spend your life. In this job I get to be a scientist, an artist, a politician, a manager, a chemist, and sometimes even a poet. There’s almost nothing in life that you learn that you can’t put to use in being a doctor…that’s why it’s such a fascinating career.”

Through the years, Dr. Guilbert has been considered by many of his patients as not only a great doctor to them, but also a good friend. Often in his practice he treats two or even three generations of the same family.

Yet no matter what patient he’s treating, Dr. Guilbert always has the same objective in mind. “My goal is to treat the patient the way I would expect to be treated. I think that is probably the biggest guiding rule, something I’ve followed since I became a physician many years ago,” he says.

Dr. Guilbert has a special appreciation for those patients he’s treated who have prevailed over their difficulties. “I really admire the patients who do such a great job of persevering – people who don’t give up. Those patients who are getting treatment for a disease yet still taking care of their kids, their parents, their loved ones…they are really an inspiration.”

Like many Fallon Clinic internists, Dr. Guilbert enjoys teaching and mentoring future physicians. “I do a lot of mentoring and have a resident who works with me one day a week. Plus I am responsible for teaching residents about consultative medicine at Saint Vincent Hospital. I really enjoy the teaching aspect of being a physician…for me it’s very rewarding to share what I’ve learned.”

During his spare time, Dr. Guilbert enjoys listening to music and reading literature, especially poetry. “I love John Donne, Gerard Manley Hopkins and all the romantic poets. I also enjoy more modern poets like Robert Frost, E.E. Cummings, Wallace Stevens, T.S. Eliot, and others.” Dr. Guilbert and his wife also enjoy traveling to Hawaii, Italy, Alaska and other beautiful locations. “Alaska is very spectacular, and if you go in the summer you can hear the glaciers crack with a sound that’s as loud as thunderbolts. It’s really something!”
